What Does a Clean Nose Have to Do With Nitric Oxide?

Once you understand that the nose produces nitric oxide, the next question is obvious: What does keeping your nose clean have to do with it?

The answer begins with a more complete understanding of the nose itself.

Your nose is not simply a passage through which air travels. It is a highly active biological system that filters, warms, humidifies, detects, clears, and helps defend against what you breathe in. Your sinuses are a major source of nitric oxide

The paranasal sinuses are air-filled spaces connected to the nasal cavity through small openings. They produce especially high concentrations of nitric oxide, which then moves from the sinuses into the nasal passages.

There, nitric oxide participates in several important biological functions. It helps support the movement of cilia, contributes to the upper airway’s natural defenses, and acts as a signaling molecule involved in airway regulation.

When you inhale through your nose, air moves through this nitric-oxide-rich environment before entering the lower airways.

A portion of the nitric oxide produced in the nasal cavity and sinuses travels with that inhaled air toward the lungs. There, it may help dilate pulmonary blood vessels and support the matching of airflow with blood flow—part of the process involved in efficient oxygen exchange.

Breathing through the mouth bypasses much of this nasal pathway.

That does not mean every nasal breath produces a dramatic or immediately noticeable effect. It means nasal breathing makes use of a biological system the body already built into the respiratory process.
