How Nitric Oxide Works in the Nose

Most of us know nitric oxide as the molecule that opens up blood vessels.

When you exercise, your body produces more of it. Blood vessels dilate, circulation improves, and you literally warm up. That familiar flush and readiness is nitric oxide at work throughout the body.

Far fewer people know that the nose and paranasal sinuses are among the richest sources of nitric oxide in the entire human body. These high concentrations play a quiet but important role in keeping the upper airways clean, defended, and functioning well.

What nitric oxide does in the nose

The paranasal sinuses produce especially high levels of nitric oxide. Its main known functions include:

1.  Supports natural defense

Nitric oxide can inhibit the growth or activity of certain bacteria, fungi, and viruses. It forms one element of the upper airway’s broader host-defense system—not a complete immune system by itself.

2.  Supports the nose’s cleaning mechanism

Nitric oxide helps stimulate the movement of cilia—the microscopic hair-like structures that move mucus, trapped particles, and microorganisms through the nasal passages. Scientists call this process mucociliary clearance.

3.  Helps regulate airflow and airway biology

It acts as a local signaling molecule involved in airway tone, inflammation, blood flow, and communication between cells in the respiratory tract.

4.  Travels with nasal breathing into the lungs

When you breathe through your nose, some of the nitric oxide produced in the sinuses and nasal cavity is carried into the lower airways. There it may contribute to the dilation of pulmonary blood vessels and the matching of airflow with blood flow, supporting efficient oxygen exchange. Researchers sometimes describe this as an “aerocrine” function—a substance made in one part of the airway that is transported through the air to act elsewhere.

In short, the same molecule that helps your body warm up during exercise also helps your nose stay defended, clear, and efficient at delivering conditioned air to the lungs. Supporting healthy nasal and sinus function—through clear passages and good breathing habits—allows this natural system to work as intended.
